A Peek into the Sausage Factory...
a Guest Post by Alison DeLaine

We've all heard that old adage about watching sausage get made. I'm convinced the principle holds true for watching books get written. If you actually did observe this entire process, you might never read again! It's that messy.

Which is why I'm not going to tell you about all those bits of tired dialogue and eye-rolling prose littering the DeLaine factory floor. I want you to think my stories flow perfectly formed from my fingertips like...
um...
Well, there goes the sausage metaphor.

As messy as my process was, A Wedding by Dawn was especially fun to write. I already knew Nick and India from my debut novel, A Gentleman 'til Midnight, and I knew they would hate each other. Well, "hate" may be a bit strong. Let's just say that Nick would not have considered Lady India for a single second were it not for the money that came with marrying her. And India would rather have given her virtue to a stranger than give herself to Nick in marriage.

At least, that's how it starts. If you're a romance reader, I don't have to tell you that's not how it ends. But getting these two together wasn’t easy! And sometimes, as an author, I am my own worst enemy.

Since this is a behind-the-scenes post, I'll share a few glimpses into the sausage factory after all by revealing three Important Lessons I learned while writing A Wedding by Dawn:

1) A Romance Hero cannot have, shall we say, an anatomical failure. Not even if he's been drinking heavily. Apparently, some kinds of realism are undesirable in a romance novel. (Who knew?) The Romance Hero must be able to "stand at attention" under any and all circumstances. So rest assured, you'll not have to worry about any unseemly moments of underperformance from Nick.

2) A Romance Heroine must have certain standards of modesty. Just call me Alison "Taking things too far" DeLaine. I could fall back on the old "just doing what the characters told me to do" excuse, but the fact is, I'm the one who thought it would be a good idea for India to bare all in her quest to prove herself unmarriageable. Enter my editor... and exit the semi-public nudity. My bad.

3) A Romance Author should not use the dart-board approach to decide when and where the Romance Couple will consummate their relationship. Seriously, there was a point at which I had absolutely no idea when Nick and India would first do the deed. Here? There? (No, not everywhere. Sorry.) Don't get me wrong... There's plenty of spicy stuff. I mean, there has to be lots of lead-in before the Big Scene, right? But when it came to that Special Moment, it wasn't until one of the very last drafts that I finally realized, "Yes! Now!" (At which point, fortunately, I had already learned Lesson #1.)

For the Love of Breeches...
a Guest Post by Alison DeLaine

What's Not to Love Inside Breeches?

Oops. I meant to say about breeches. Seriously. There’s a lot to love about them. Any woman worth her salt fantasizes about the days when a girl could ogle a man's legs without having her view obstructed by extra yardage. (Of fabric. What kind of blog post do you think this is?)

Breeches were the mini-skirts of their day--except the male/female roles were completely reversed. And some of those men had a damn fine pair of legs. Which, of course, is exactly how I envision my hero in A Gentleman 'til Midnight. Because I just wouldn't write a hero who didn't have good legs. And by "good," I mean strong, muscular, and powerful enough to sustain the leverage required for a good, long--

Well, never mind about that. Let's just say that for Captain James Warre (aka the Earl of Croston), performance isn't an issue:

“Touch me, Katherine,” he rasped, but she was already there. Her hands moved over the front of his breeches—too slow, too soft. His breeches were so tight it hurt. Ah, God—he undid the fastening and…"
And you’ll just have to read the book for the rest, because it wouldn’t be appropriate on a family blog like NARB.

As you can see, breeches play a very crucial role in the historical romance. Really, as an author, I'm not sure what I would do without them. I like to imagine that a man's breeches could reveal… well… all kinds of things about what he might be thinking. In A Gentleman ‘til Midnight, my heroine is pretty sharp about these things. Her cutlass is pretty sharp, too, and comes in handy when cornered by an unwanted rakehell:

Apparently sensing victory, the duke pushed away from the railing and took a step toward her. “I’m very sure when I meet a woman who would appreciate my strengths.” There was just enough light filtering from the windows to see his strengths bulging hard inside his breeches.
“Oh, yes. I certainly can appreciate them.” Katherine feinted with her left hand as though she meant to touch him.
“Then by all means, let us— Bloody hell!” The duke jumped back three feet when she whipped her cutlass from its hiding place in her skirts.

Let’s just say the poor duke’s breeches ended up a casualty of that encounter.

Really, the saddest thing about breeches in a historical romance is that at some point—yes, it’s true—they must be pulled up and refastened. For my Captain Warre, that certainly marked a low point:

Was that it, then? A hasty farewell as he buttoned his breeches and stepped out of her coach two streets away to avoid being seen? Sod it all, he’d made a bloody mess of things.

There’s just so much implied in a phrase like “he buttoned his breeches,” isn’t there? But if implications aren’t enough for you, I’m giving away a FREE copy of A Gentleman ‘til Midnight to TWO lucky people who comment here on or before December 23rd! Winners will be chosen on December 24.

About Heather:
Heather Snow is a historical romance author with a degree in Chemistry who discovered she much preferred creating chemistry on the page, rather than in the lab. She is forever trying to wrangle her left and right brain to work together (some days with more success than others!), but if her two sides had to duke it out, left would win every time—which can be a creative challenge. Luckily, she loves challenges…she just goes about solving them analytically.

Heather lives in the Midwest with her husband, two rambunctious boys and one very put upon cat. She sincerely hopes you find her stories have just the right chemistry…

Sweet Enemy

A Veiled Seduction Novel
Book One
"Historical intrigue and heart-pounding passion make Sweet Enemy a great read. Romance fans will love it.

-#1NYT Bestselling Author JULIE GARWOOD

Geoffrey Wentworth, a war hero and rising political star, never wanted to be the Earl, but when his brother dies, he knows his duty—take up the responsibility for his family’s estates. His mother’s definition of duty differs from his, however, and can be summed up in one word—heirs. When Geoffrey rushes home to answer her urgent summons, he finds himself host to a house full of women, all vying to become the next Countess of Stratford. But his love is Parliament, where he wields his influence and reputation to better the lives of ex-soldiers, until a tempting houseguest and a secret from his past threaten his freedom…and his heart.
Liliana Claremont, a brilliant chemist, doesn’t want to be any man’s wife, much less a Countess. If she had tuppence for every time she’d been told her place was filling the nursery, not experimenting in the laboratory, she could buy the Tower Bridge. However, when she receives a coveted invitation to the Earl’s house party, she trades in her beakers for ball gowns and gladly takes on the guise of husband hunter—for the chance to uncover what the Earl had to do with the murder of her father.

Liliana believes the best way to get the answers she needs is to keep her enemy close, though romance is not part of her formula. But it only takes one kiss to start a reaction she can't control...

###
“Is it always like this?” she asked, her voice a breathy sound that stroked him as surely as if she’d touched him. “This . . .” She pressed her lips together and her brows dipped, and Geoffrey knew her innocence struggled to find the words for how she was feeling. “This overwhelming, gnawing ache inside?” She smoothed her palm down her center, settling it low on her stomach.

Geoffrey shook his head. It had never been like this for him before. Ever. “No,” he whispered. “This is something special.”

She gave a slow nod of comprehension, never looking away from him.

She was something special. What she made him feel was something special. Something he’d never before even wanted to feel but now was beginning to suspect he didn’t want to live without.

Geoffrey held her in his lap a moment longer, loath to lose the weight and warmth of her. Then he helped her to rise, to right herself. As they restored their appearances and gathered the horses, Geoffrey’s mind was awhirl, and though it circled quickly, he didn’t doubt what he was thinking. His instincts had proven to be solid over his life, and they were telling him one thing emphatically.

He wanted Liliana as his wife.

Honest, forthright, curious, unconventional, passionate, brilliant Liliana.

But she didn’t want him. Not as a husband, anyway. She just wanted to experiment.

But he could change her mind. She’d given him the perfect opening, just the right ammunition—her nature. If experimentation was the way to a scientist’s heart, he’d oblige her. And every step they took would bind her more and more to him.

Deep in his chest, Geoffrey felt a smile form and expand until it couldn’t be contained. It built, rose in him until it burst forth on his face. He was more and more certain Liliana would be a good wife for him.

How ironic that he was now no different from everyone else here at Somerton Park.

He was planning to trap someone into marriage.

###

Did you know that men fall in love faster than women? No, really. According to Dr. Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist from Rutgers University, it’s true. “Men fall in love faster than women do. Women take longer because they have to create a “memory trail” of their mate’s behaviors. She has to remember what he promised, what he’s done for the partnership, and what he failed to do.” Dr. Fisher’s work on the brain chemistry of love is fascinating, fascinating stuff, equating romantic love to chemical addiction and explaining just what goes on beneath the surface that attracts us to one person but not another, sometimes against our own will.

As a sciency-type myself, I love studies like these. I use them to inform my writing, and hopefully create love stories that feel authentic when you read them. I also have a laugh at my poor clueless heroes and heroines, who can’t possibly even know that they don’t stand a chance against the powerful biological forces of attraction, lust and love.

Take poor Liliana, for example. She emphatically does not want to fall in love with Geoffrey. The man is her enemy. She’s pretty certain someone in his family killed her father, and fully expects that even if Geoffrey doesn’t know anything about it, once he finds out, he’ll do what he must to protect his own. And yet, she can’t seem to stay away from him. Subconsciously, she is drawn to him and once she gives in, even just a little, she’s trapped. Geoffrey has her nailed (literally) when he decides to use her natural curiosity and experimental nature to bind her to him, first with kisses and then with more.

You see, though she couldn’t possibly have known this in Regency times, if Liliana truly didn’t want to fall for Geoffrey, she never should have let him touch her. Human touch, particularly in women, releases a hormone called oxytocin into our bodies. When combined with estrogen, oxytocin creates a desire to be penetrated…and we all know what that leads to ;). Unfortunately for Liliana (or fortunately, in my opinion!), orgasm causes oxytocin levels to spike three to five times higher than normal, bonding her further to Geoffrey in the bliss called afterglow. So, every time they kiss, every time they touch, every time they make love, her hormone levels rise, making her want him more and more, despite her better judgment, in a lovely, delicious cycle.

Sure, this makes for great internal conflict for our heroine, but how does this great sex lead to everlasting love? Well, oxytocin is also known as “the cuddle hormone.” It’s the same that is flooded through a new mother’s body to bond her to her newborn. It creates feelings of strong attachment and satisfaction that, combined with the other hormones that flow through our brains during the early stages of lust, can push us over the threshold to love. Dr. Fisher says, “Having sex can trigger love—probably because after orgasm, there’s a peak in dopamine activity. So watch out if you casually bed down with someone—you might unintentionally fall for them.”

You didn’t know we romance novelists were so scientifically accurate when we wrote love stories, did you?

And yes, Liliana does eventually fall for the handsome earl, not just because of her hormones and the fabulous sex. Though that doesn’t hurt , it’s only a small part of Geoffrey and Liliana’s love story. I hope you enjoy my tale of two enemies who discover, against all odds, that their happily-ever-afters lie together.

Why write a series?
by Cassandra Carr

Everyone and their brother is writing series books these days. It's getting more and more difficult to find a standalone. Did you ever wonder why so many writers choose to write books in a series? Well, there are several reasons.

First, readers like to stay in one "world" and see what happens with all the characters. Readers like to have everybody fall in love, and if they're reading a standalone book where they really like one of the minor characters, they'll never know how that character's story played out. If the book is a series, though, there's a chance the writer will tell that character's story.

Second, and I probably shouldn't tell you this, but it's easier for authors. You can either make up different worlds for thirty standalone books, or you can make up three worlds for three ten-book series or five for a bunch of five-book series. Which sounds easier to you?

Third, it builds anticipation and creates a built-in audience. After all, if you read the first in a series and love it aren't you likely to buy at least the next book in the series and possibly more?

Do you like to read books in a series or do you prefer standalones?

Excerpt:
Leo stalked into the dressing room, heading straight for the can. Just as he’d planned, by the time he got out, the second period was about to start. Tom told him he was going to continue to play Scott to see if they couldn’t salvage the game, and Leo nodded. It irked him that he’d been left out to dry, but he also knew damn well they’d done the same to Scott in the past. It was one of those weird hockey things no one could put a finger on, and Leo didn’t even try. After trundling back to the bench for the second period, his stomach growled. The noise caused his mind to wander, straight to the tall, curvy woman with a mess of curls his hands just itched to plunge into.
Right now, Kelly Chase was probably pulling her famous apple pie out of the oven at the bistro where he and Scott had been going for dinner after games for nearly a year. Thinking about seeing her made his cock harden inside his jock and he willed it down. Having a hard-on when wearing a cup was a pretty damn unpleasant experience—one he wasn’t eager to go through at the moment. He’d bet she knew he’d been pulled, but he’d also put money on the fact that if anyone made an ass-hatted comment about why, she’d shut them right up. Kelly knew her hockey, and she watched every game on the big screen TV housed behind the counter at her bistro as best she could in between cooking meals for the customers. He could almost smell her special sour cream apple pie. She only made it on home game days when she knew Leo and Scott would be coming in afterward for their postgame meal. She’d even named it after the team, calling it “Intimidating Apple Pie.” There was sure as hell nothing intimidating about it, but it was definitely sinful, which was just how he liked it. Thinking about her and her pie brought his mind to other subjects, like what she was most likely wearing that night. It drove him crazy the way she dressed in these cute little light-pink T-shirts with “Kelly’s” emblazoned on the front, right across her ample breasts. Even her chef’s clogs—also light pink—were cute. But her body wasn’t cute. It was sexy as hell. She was all bumps and curves, in all the right places. She wasn’t a dainty little thing, standing only about an inch shorter than his five foot ten, and he loved that about her.It gave him something to hold on to, should he ever be blessed with the opportunity to get into her checkered chef’s pants. Leo was jerked out of his lust-hazed stupor by the “heads up” shout from his teammates. A puck was sailing right for him, and he automatically knocked it down with his blocker before it could do any damage. He didn’t wear his goalie mask on the bench, and if his reflexes weren’t lightning quick, he would’ve taken a puck right to his grill. Head in the game, Leo.
Settling back, he watched his team tie it up by the end of the second. During intermission, Tom took both he and Scott aside and said he wanted to put Leo back in. Scott shrugged. He’d always been the more easygoing of the two men. Their combined personalities meshed well, which translated into a successful goaltending partnership and a friendship that had spanned nearly eight years. Leo stretched out and took the ice for the third. Their opponent seemed momentarily surprised by another goaltending change but recovered quickly and gave the Intimidators a challenge. In the end, Leo got the win by one goal. After accepting the congratulations of his teammates, he bopped Scott on the head as they left the ice together. “Kelly’s is on you tonight, bro,” Scott said. Leo snorted. He’d been expecting no less. “Not a problem. I hope she made apple pie.”
“She always makes apple pie if there’s a home game.” They rushed through their postgame interviews and hopped into the shower. Only a half hour after the buzzer, they were climbing into Leo’s Range Rover on their way to Kelly’s. When they walked in, she turned from behind the counter to greet them. Leo caught sight of her luscious tits straining the material of her T-shirt and his dick twitched. He quickly ran his hand over it. Down, boy.
“Hey guys. Good game, both of you.”
“Thanks,” they answered in unison, sliding onto stools.
“How about some apple pie?” Leo said, licking his lips already. An image of him nibbling pieces of it off of her flew into his head. Man, was he horny tonight…
Kelly put her hands on her hips. “You know better than that. I never let you have apple pie until after you eat a good meal.”
Leo rolled his eyes. “Fine.” Perusing the specials written on a chalkboard underneath the TV, he ordered shepherd’s pie. Scott asked for a chicken souvlaki wrap, and they settled back to relax as Kelly went into the kitchen to make their food. “I fuckin’ love those T-shirts. I’d give up a mil of my salary just to be that T-shirt for a day.”
“Don’t I know it…” Since it was late, Kelly was waiting tables herself, in addition to cooking, and both of them tracked her as she bustled around behind the counter. Coming back over, she poured them both ice waters and plopped silverware in front of them before going into the back once again. There were still a few customers, but everyone gave the Intimidators their privacy here—it was one of the reasons Leo and Scott loved to come here so much. The primary reason, of course, was Kelly herself.
“Okay, so let’s go over everything again—make sure we’re on the same page here,” Leo urged.
“All right. Can’t hurt. We need to present a united front if we’re gonna do this.”
“Exactly. So both of us want her.” They’d been attracted to Kelly since the moment they’d laid eyes on her, but had come to the realization a few months ago that their feelings ran deeper than simple lust. Scott nodded, his eyes as determined and focused as Leo had ever seen them. “Yes, we both want her, and the only way that will work is if we share her. But we need to make it clear at some point, maybe not right up front, that we want her more than just sex.”
“And we think tonight is the night?”
“She’s definitely intrigued.” Scott paused and Leo could practically see the wheels turning in his friend’s head. “Even when we mentioned a threesome last week, she didn’t run.”
“Yeah, and did you see the expression on her face? She wants it.”
“I think so, too. But don’t forget. We can’t push her too hard. And everything one of us does affects the other. We can’t let her tear us apart, and if this thing starts to do that, we need to reconsider.”
“Agreed,” Leo answered. He held up his fist. “Even now, even with Kelly, bros over hos, man.” The two men did a quick fist bump and Leo relaxed a little.
A few minutes later, Kelly backed out of the kitchen, her arms laden with plates, and both men paused to admire her ass in her tight chef’s pants. She caught them staring and just shook her head, laughing.
Yes, they were done waiting for her to come around. It was time to put Operation Seduction into action. [Copyright 2011, Cassandra Carr]

Hi, Rita and readers!
Thank so much for inviting me here to kick off the blog tour for SEASON FOR TEMPTATION. This is my debut historical romance, so it’s my first stop on my first blog tour.
So, let’s talk about firsts.
Putting firsts into a story is a useful tool for authors—and I’m not just talking about *that* kind of first. In real life, you can learn a lot about people when you see what they do in a new situation.
For example. On my first date with Mr. R, I wasn’t sure it really was a date at all. We had agreed to meet at a sports bar and play one of those electronic trivia games, because we both liked trivia. I also liked Mr. R, but that was my little secret.
I tend to be a shy person, so on this is-it-or-isn’t-it-a-date, I coped with my nervousness by:
  1. making dumb jokes,
  2. talking really fast, and
  3. answering all the trivia questions about parts of the skeleton, so Mr. R and I won the game.
What did this teach Mr. R about me? Overall, I think it showed him that I’m a well-meaning dork, which I would consider an accurate impression. And apparently that was all right with him, since he proposed four months later. (I don’t think he meant to, exactly, but that’s another story.)
The first meeting of characters in a romance can be just as revealing. As readers, we know that the hero and heroine will wind up together, but each journey to that happily-ever-after is unique. Sometimes it begins with love; sometimes the first impression is more like hate (but, you know, the lusty kind). Or sometimes…well, sometimes the whole situation is just embarrassing.
SEASON FOR TEMPTATION has the embarrassing kind.
The story begins when James, Viscount Matheson, journeys to meet the family of his new fiancée of convenience. He got engaged in a hurry because of a family scandal (embarrassment number 1), but he knows little about his betrothed (embarrassment number 2).
Let’s see how he feels, shall we?

[Excerpt from Season for Temptation]
"The clock on the drawing room mantel ticked away the seconds loudly, and James drummed his fingers on his knee in time with it.
Perhaps it was excitement that caused his every nerve to feel on edge. A man should feel excited to meet his fiancée’s family, shouldn’t he? Certainly not nervous, though. Not when that man was a viscount, accustomed to the sharp eyes and sharper tongues of the ton.
But ever since Lord Oliver had written to approve James’s suit of the Honorable Louisa, James had felt nervous, as if something might go awry and upset his swiftly laid plans. Now that he was in the Olivers’ drawing room, his feeling of anxiety grew even stronger."
Oh, James. James, James, James. You realize you’re screwed, don’t you? You know things are about to get more awkward, right?

[Excerpt from Season For Temptation]
"… a young woman burst into the room at a half-run. She was muttering loudly, her expression harried and the bodice of her frock askew.
“Curse and drat that girl, drat her. I knew she hadn’t left her music in here, but where could it be? We’ll never find it before the vi–”
As her eyes roved the room, she froze in mid-word upon seeing James. Her mouth dropped open. “Urr.”
The clock on the drawing room mantel ticked off four endless seconds as James stared at her, still too surprised to speak, and she stared back with wide blue eyes.
The young woman spoke first. “Well, I’m embarrassed. I don’t know what to say.” She glanced at the doorway with an expression of longing. “Could I go back out and pretend this never happened?” "

Voilà! Embarrassments numbers 3 and 4, since the feeling is mutual.
And that’s the first meeting between James and Julia—his heroine, though he doesn’t know it yet. She’s also the stepsister of his fiancée, though he doesn’t know that yet either.
After this unexpected first meeting, things do improve. James realizes that his fiancée’s family is every bit as odd and friendly as he could wish, and he begins to enjoy himself even with the shadow of a scandal still looming over him.
Of course, this peace doesn’t last long. As you might have guessed, I like to embarrass my characters, and there aren’t many things more embarrassing than falling in love with the wrong person.

We’ve all had our share of awkward firsts, I’d bet. Comment and let us know about an awkward first date or first meeting that you had! I’ll give away a copy of SEASON FOR TEMPTATION to one random commenter.

Please welcome to the blog a lovely new-to-me author who will tell us all about her self published contemporary romance 'Jennifer's Garden'. And be on the look out for her next book 'Lust On The Rocks', coming soon. But first, let's get to know this author and explore the elements in her book:

Dianne Venetta

About the Author:
Dianne lives in Central Florida with her husband, two children and part-time Yellow Lab—Cody boy! When not whacking away at her keyboard crafting her next novel you'll find her in the family's organic garden chasing grasshoppers and plucking hornworms all the while crafting wild analogies between kids and plants and men. Definitely men.

A girl's gotta have fun, right?
When she's not knee-deep in dirt or romance, Dianne contributes garden advice for various websites and volunteers in her kids' school garden (a crazy existence to be sure). But at the end of the day, if she can inspire someone to stop and smell the roses--or rosemary!—kiss their child and spouse good-night, be kind to a neighbor and Mother Earth, then she's done all right.

Hi and thanks for having me today! My current release, Jennifer's Garden, epitomizes the showdown between a career woman's criteria for the perfect husband and what true love means. In a race against time, cardiologist Jennifer Hamilton is caught between her mother's dying wish and taking the risk of a lifetime with Jackson Montgomery. He's the man hired to complete the landscaping for her new home—the venue for her upcoming wedding. Jackson's everything she never wanted in a man, but as the job progresses, his lure pulls strong. It's an attraction she cannot deny.
And one that puts her career on the line.

Jennifer has some decisions to make, choices that pull her in opposite directions. Her best friend Samantha Rawlings is pulling her toward new horizons yet her traditional mindset resists.
She simply cannot let go of the relationship she has with Aurelio Villarreal. Elegant, sophisticated, he cherishes her mind and body. Or so she thinks.

But have you ever wondered what brought us (women) to this place? I mean, where did this driving desire to be cherished and adored originate? Is it in our genes?

Or jeans. J (Sometimes I wonder!) Now that I have my own daughter, I do ponder these things. And I must confess that while tucked away in my garden, toiling away with seeds and weeds—a lovely hobby if you have the time—thoughts of her future and romantic prospects tip toe into my mind. Will she be strong and independent? Will she drive the relationship? Or will she wait until someone notices her…

Much like the predictable dance of springtime, when buds burst open, leaves unfurl, colors deepen and young flowers mature into their blossoms. Nestled together in the garden, it’s not long before the inevitable comparisons arise. Each amazing and breathtaking in their own right, yet they can’t help but wonder how they measure up against the whole.

“Are my petals too plump?

“Do these leaves make my bottom look wide?”

Of course not. You’re beautiful.

“You’re just saying that because you’re my gardener, aren’t you?”

Then it happens. The handsome stranger strolls along and spritzes the crowd with a mist of attention. The bed goes crazy. Everyone brightens, arching further toward the admirer, each hoping to be noticed. “Pick me. Pick me!”

He leans over and plucks one by the stem, taking her for his own. She's been chosen as the most beautiful bloom, a stand out among the crowd, worthy of being taken home for display.

But soon she despairs. She's alone, perched on a pedestal, no longer surrounded by her colorful counterparts. Once admired by many, she's now occupied by one. Passersby gawk and exclaim, but rarely linger. Why would they?

She's taken.

It's not long before she glances about her new home and wonders, What are the others doing? Are they basking in the sun, adorned by bees and butterflies? Or swaying to the breeze, wild and free...

But why so sad, sweetheart? Isn’t this what you wanted? Weren’t you feeling cramped, lost among the cluster of your peers? Didn’t you yearn to be chosen and deemed the most lovely blossom of all? Most desirable?

Well, sure…in so many words. We all want to be “picked,” cherished as the most beautiful, perfect creation that ever existed. Doesn’t it follow that we should be ecstatic when clipped free from the crowd? Aren’t we supposed to be happy?

Yes and no. If your petals were chosen for love, then yes. But if they were chosen to be cherished like a display trophy…

Then, no. When a relationship is absent true love, what's the point in committing? Strange to compare females to flowers, I know, but I spend a lot of time in the garden. A lot. (You should see how I compare/contrast men!)

But I digress. The point remains. Why marry unless you've found true love? The kind that stands by your side when life gets rough and tumble, makes you smile when your spirits are down, picks you up when you're tired and achy—oh wait—er, that's author intrusion on my part. Sorry! But you get the idea. The decision to marry is an important one and the dilemma facing my heroine, Jennifer Hamilton. Does a criterion for the perfect husband exist? Does such a creature exist?

Maybe not. But then again, there is that Jackson Montgomery... Personally, I'd follow him anywhere!
